With the growing competition, MBBS is no longer considered as the final qualification as it was considered in the past. A vast array of career options are available in India after MBBS.

On 29th November 2020, Dr. Dhruv Kapoor of 2013 batch MBBS (Currently ENT Resident in UCMS) held a webinar on Career opportunities after MBBS, here's a link to that recording of Webinar.

1. MD/MS: It is the conventional PG degree course, chosen by most of the students after MBBS.

2. Diplomate of National Board (DNB): Alternate PG degree course offered by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). It is considered equivalent to MD/MS courses.

3. Research: being a developing country India has an immense need and demand for clinical research. ICMR, CIMAP, CCMB are some of the institutions offering research opportunities.

PhD programmes are available at various institutions. Some institutions like NIMHANS offer direct PhD courses after MBBS. ICMR offers a MD/MS-PhD ProgrammeMD/MS-PhD Programme for MBBS graduates, currently at 3 institutions of the country (King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow; National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru and SRI Ramachandra University, Chennai)

Masters in Medical Science and Technology (MMST): Offered by School of Medical Science and Technology (SMST; affiliated to IIT Kharagpur), this Course is an Intermix of Technology in Medical Science; including disciplines like Bioinformatics, Stem Cell Research, Tele-medicine, etc. It is a three year postgraduate medical professional degree course that provides physician-scientist training in India.The aim of the course is to prepare well equipped and highly skilled medical professionals who are capable of handling advanced technology in the field of medical science.It's a unique program in the way to bridge the gap between biological science, engineering and physical science. PCMB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics) in 12th class is a requirement for this course, so plan accordingly.

4. Masters in Public Health: Public Health, entails all aspects of promoting and maintaining the standards of people's health. Among many other courses in public health, MPH is the most chosen one after MBBS. The MPH degree entails on nuances of public health practices, on both grass root and government levels. Competencies achieved are in domains of
Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health Policy and Systems, Public Health

5. Leadership and Management, Evidence-Based Policy and Health Care, Health Communication, Diversity and Culture, Program Management and Planning, Public Health Biology, Systems Thinking and Environmental Health Sciences. This degree often supplements skill sets achieved by an MBBS Course, making it one of the most perfect post-MBBS programmes. Future prospects include Occupational and Environmental Health Specialist, Epidemiologist and Public Health Policy Analysts. Demand has risen over the last few years. It is currently offered at a number of institutes in India.

6. Masters in Hospital Administration (MHA): Hospital administration deals with the management, leadership, and administration of healthcare systems, hospital networks, and hospitals. MHA is a 2 year PG course available in a number of institutes in India. Know more about it here.

7. M.Tech in Biomedical Engineering and Biological Sciences: MBBS graduates are eligible for M.Tech Biomedical Engineering at various institutions including many IITs. You'll have to clear the GATE/NEET-PG exam and then sit for their written examination and interviews. Though the process is slightly different at different institutions.

8. MBA: Undoubtedly, one of the most unconventional choices made after MBBS, especially if Indian scenarios are taken into consideration. Why pursue an MBA after MBBS?-- To explore career opportunities in the management of healthcare establishments and to develop entrepreneurial skills.

9. M.Sc: MBBS graduates can pursue Master of Science(MSc) degrees in various fields including, anatomy, audiology, epidemiology, psychiatry, medical biochemistry among others. Know more about it here.

10. UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE): Civil services is emerging as an alternative career option for MBBS graduates interested in holding administrative positions. Remarkably, doctors have an above average success rate in the UPSC CS Exam. Many of the doctors bag top ranks in the UPSC CSE merit list every year. Also, it is a rewarding career to pursue for those willing to work on problems at the grassroots level.

11. UPSC Combined Medical Services (CMS): The Combined Medical Services examination is conducted by the UPSC for positions of Medical Officer in various organizations like the Indian Ordnance Factories, Indian Railways, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council functioning under the Government of India.
